The S.S. Lane Victory - A World War 2 Merchant Marine Victory Ship : A trip aboard the historic landmark S.S. Lane Victory berthed in San Pedro below the Vincent Thomas Bridge in the Los Angeles Harbor Channel. It is a restored Victory Ship built in 1945 by CalShip (California Shipbuilding Corporation) in Los Angeles and served with distinction in World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War. It was recovered from the reserve fleet in Suisan Bay, California and towed into harbor on June 12, 1989. It took 3 years and countless hours of volunteer labor and material to restore the ship from its decay of sitting silently in Suisan Bay since 1970. Had it not been for the dedicated team of the United States Merchant Marine Veterans of World War II, the Lane Victory would have eventually been scrapped like her sisters. The ship is open daily for tours and goes out on several cruises every summer. Their website is www.lanevictory.org

World War II Liberty Ship Yard Terminal Island Los Angeles California : Rare photographs and documents from World War II showing the building and launching of Liberty Ships also known as EC2 or "Emergency Cargo" ships which played a great role in bringing equipment and supplies to the troops in their successful invasions of Africa, Berlin, and Tokio. The California Shipbuilding Corporation (CalShip) operated the yard that was owned by The United States Maritime Commission which was created by an Act of Congress in 1936 for the purpose of long range planning of the United States Merchant Fleet. Franklin D. Roosevelt, President of The United States asked for 8,000,000 tons of shipping during 1942 and CalShip delivered 1,144,500 of those tons in constructing 109 of the 542 EC-2 Liberty Ships built in the shipyards of the nation of that year. One out of every seven Liberty Ships in 1942 came from this yard on Terminal Island. He would ask for 19,000,000 tons in 1943. CalShip would have 200 ships built by the middle of 1943 and continued throughout the war. Productivity increased dramatically as the first ship built would take 273 days from keel to delivery, by the 200th ship it would take only 30 days. Pepito Perez (Jose Escobar) The Spanish Clown & Vaudevillian Part 1 : Presented here is a collection of photographs acquired from the estate of the famous vaudeville clown Pepito and his performing wife Joanne Perez. Not only is this a glimpse into the life and career of Pepito but it is also a look into the inner workings of the long lost art of vaudeville which reached its peak during the 1920's and faded out with the advent of talking movies during the 1930's. I have collaborated with Melani Carty of the www.PepitoAndJoanne.com website to bring a more complete picture of this unique individual who had the insight to save so much that had to do with his life as a live performer and on the screen.
